The Great Salt Lake is the largest remaining wetland ecosystem in the American West, but it has been disappearing before our eyes for decades. Utah's unremitting upstream diversions, water policy failures, and state-sponsored propaganda have made the lake's collapse all but certain if nothing is done.
The disappearance of the Great Salt Lake will be a disaster for public health along the Wasatch Front, an economic catastrophe, and an existential crisis for millions of migratory birds that rely on the lake each year.
While state leaders waste time congratulating themselves for minuscule water deliveries and passing harmful legislation, the lake continues to see year-over-year declines.
To make up for this dereliction of duty, Utah Rivers Council founded the Great Salt Lake Waterkeeper and joined the Waterkeeper Alliance, a global network of water conservation groups that fight for clean water, responsible resource use, and commonsense conservation.
By joining this global network of Waterkeeper organizations, we hope to bring international attention to the Great Salt Lake crisis and pressure Utah into implementing policy solutions that will restore the Great Salt Lake to 1,700 square miles of surface area, like those outlined in our 4,200 Project.
As the Great Salt Lake Waterkeeper, Utah Rivers Council will continue fighting for the Great Salt Lake through legislation, litigation, and grassroots action.
