A Coalition of Colorado River Basin Nonprofits Published a New Report on the Colorado River Crisis

In partnership with the Great Basin Water Network, the Glen Canyon Institute, and several other organizations, Utah Rivers Council unveiled a new report on the imminent Colorado River crisis on October 1, the first day of the new water year. The report, There’s No Water Available, elucidates the causes and repercussions of the basin states’ irresponsible depletions and shines a light on the path forward.

Weathering the Colorado River catastrophe that climate change, overconsumption, and shortsightedness have shaped will require adapting to a new era of hydrologic extremes. This will take revisions to the laws that govern our water use, updates to the 20th century infrastructure along the river, and a change in mindset.

Decisionmakers need to shift away from the supply-focused thinking that encourages overuse and incentivizes waste. We all must learn to respect and protect this essential river system. There’s No Water Available offers insights about these issues, the crucial paradigm shift we need, and the policy solutions that will modernize the basin states to face the new reality of the Colorado River.
